South Hedland Landfill leads the way on pallet recycling in the Pilbara

The Town of Port Hedland is proud to be part of a new collaboration with Perth-based timber pallet recycling company PalletON, and with other local governments across the Pilbara to lead the charge on pallet recycling in the region.

Recently, the first truckload of 300 pallets was collected from the South Hedland Landfill and transported to Perth for recycling and reuse.

This initiative not only helps clear landfill sites that are inundated with discarded timber pallets but also delivers significant environmental benefits.

Recycling pallets reduces carbon emissions associated with pallet production. Each Australian standard pallet generates approximately 15kg of carbon emissions during production, along with other environmental impacts such as land and water use and air pollutants.

By recovering and reusing pallets multiple times, these effects are dramatically reduced. In fact, a full semi-trailer load of recovered pallets equates to more than 5 tonnes of carbon emissions avoided, even after accounting for transport back to Perth.

Once recycled, pallets are quality checked and recirculated to businesses sending goods to the Pilbara, creating a circular economy model that benefits both industry and the environment.

The Town is working closely with Care for Hedland Association and PalletON to tackle the issue of timber pallet waste.

Together, we are committed to delivering long-term benefits for our environment, community, and local businesses.
