A new Hedland Playspace Precinct and dog recreation area are one step closer after Town of Port Hedland Councillors endorsed redevelopment plans for Marquee Park at Wednesday's Ordinary Council Meeting.

Councillors endorsed revised concept plans for Marquee Park which features two off-leash dog areas including separate all-dog and puppy areas, while retaining and upgrading the existing playground.

Mayor Peter Carter said the Town was committed to providing suitable amenities for the community, which was part of the Town’s vision to increase liveability and attract more people to Hedland.

“This exciting redevelopment is part of the Town’s vision to create vibrant, safe and unique lifestyle facilities for all current and future community members - as well as visitors to Hedland - to enjoy,” Mayor Carter said.

The former splash pad will be developed into separate ninja warrior/outdoor fitness and parkour obstacle zones incorporating existing shade structures.

The redevelopment will also include a ‘Scoot and Ride’ track.

Multi-use green space will be maintained throughout Marquee Park with picnic facilities retained.

The Marquee Park works will be complemented by the Stage 3 redevelopment of the JD Hardie Centre which includes landscaping, installation of new shade structures and construction of skate ramps and BMX pump track.

“Marquee Park, with its enhanced playground for younger children as well as the outdoor fitness zones, and the BMX and skate facilities as part of Stage 3 of the JD Hardie Centre, will give Hedland a true playspace precinct that will prove popular with families, young children and older youth," Mayor Carter said.

“In addition, the need for secure dog-friendly areas has been identified for South Hedland and it will give dog owners a safe place to exercise with their pets.”
