Kurlu Kurlu Wirri | Little People Play – Hedland’s latest playspace for children and families was officially opened today (16 January).

Town of Port Hedland Deputy Chair of Commissioners Martin Aldridge; Minister for Regional Development Hon Stephen Dawson; Member for Pilbara Kevin Michel; representatives from Lotterywest, Kariyarra Aboriginal Corporation, Pilbara Ports, the Pilbara Development Commission, Yurra, BHP and the Department of Transport were on hand for the official opening.

Commissioner Aldridge said the playground was an added attraction to the Spoilbank Marina precinct.

“We know Hedland has a higher-than-average number of children under 10 compared to the State average,” Commissioner Aldridge said.

“So it’s great the Town has been able to provide this wonderful playground that will be a drawcard for residents and visitors to the Spoilbank precinct.”

The Town of Port Hedland secured a $4 million grant through Lotterywest to design and build the playground, which was delivered by local Indigenous construction company Yurra with sub-contractor Moduplay supplying the play equipment.

The playground includes five large shade structures as well as native trees and shrubs and wetpour rubber softfall surfaces in play areas.

“Yurra has done a terrific job with the playground, and the Town is thankful to the WA Government and Lotterywest for making this wonderful playspace a reality,” Commissioner Aldridge said.

The playground has been named Kurlu Kurlu Wirri, which means Little People Play in Kariyarra language.

The playground has been open to the public since December last year.
