The Town of Port Hedland, in partnership with Care for Hedland, is encouraging households to join the 2025 Food Waste Diversion Program to reduce food waste at home in a fun and impactful way while helping the environment.
A successful pilot program in 2024 diverted 206.5kg of food waste and prevented 0.42 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
The 2025 program has already been well received, following the official launch at this year’s Care for Hedland Sustainable Living Show Day in May, which was supported by the Town.
Care for Hedland hosted a composting workshop and distributed free, organic recycling equipment to passionate attendees who were ready to begin their composting journey.
25 compost bins, 10 kitchen compost buckets and 12 worm farms were distributed on the day, and following an overwhelming response, a waitlist was created for those who missed out.
Due to the high demand and interest, The Town funded a further 30 worm farms to the program.
Mayor Peter Carter said the support and interest in the initiative demonstrates the community’s value for sustainable living practices.
“It’s a great opportunity for locals to make an environmental impact from their own backyards.” He said.
“By supporting programs like this, we’re collectively working together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, waste, and build a stronger and cleaner future for our town.”
The program started earlier this month, and will be running through until December 2025 - giving the community an opportunity to reduce their household waste through one of three options:
- Composting at home
- Using a worm farm
- Dropping food scraps at the South Hedland Community Garden on Hedditch Street
Participants can apply to receive one of the free composting tools to get started, but supplies are limited.
Participants will also go in the draw to win great prizes by submitting their weekly food waste data.
The Town is proud to partner with Care for Hedland in this initiative, which supports the of actions outlined in the Town’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2022-2027, reflecting our commitment to local environmental action.
