A new, contemporary aquatic facility in South Hedland is one step closer with Town of Port Hedland Council endorsing concept designs.

At Wednesday night’s Ordinary Council Meeting, Elected Members voted to endorse the concept design and cost plan for the $94 million facility that includes a 50m pool, a dedicated learn-to-swim pool and a family-friendly play pool.

Mayor Jacinta Behrend said a new aquatics facility would deliver significant long-term benefits for the Hedland community.

“Having modern, accessible recreational facilities such as this will help increase health and wellbeing outcomes for our community,” Mayor Behrend said.

Mayor Behrend said the current aquatic facility in South Hedland was coming to the end of its functional life and increasing infrastructure failures had led to expensive maintenance.

“For Hedland to continue to grow as a modern regional town, we need facilities such as this to increase liveability and provide amenities for the whole community.”

Council last year endorsed a site at the South Hedland Integrated Sports Hub adjacent to Wanangkura Stadium.

Supporting amenities for the aquatics facility include a creche, a café, and shaded areas with partially covered roofing to provide sun protection, including over the learn-to-swim pool for year-round use.

The play pool zone is designed to support a range of users including families, children and recreational swimmers. It features shaded seating, interactive water elements and an accessible layout.

The café is positioned to cater for pool users and the wider community, enhancing the facility as a social destination.

The Town’s draft Long Term Financial Plan allocates $94 million for the project.

The Town has successfully secured $22.5 million for the project from the Western Australian Government and is continuing to pursue other funding opportunities.
