Town of Port Hedland councillors have endorsed naming a road after the late Julie Arif - a former councillor, historian and manager of the Port Hedland Visitor Centre and much-loved community member.
Arif Close is one of four proposed road names in the Airport Precinct that will be submitted to Landgate for formal endorsement.
The proposed names reflect a deep connection to the people, events and legacy of Hedland and mark an important step in preserving and recognising our rich history.
Along with Arif Close, councillors have endorsed the following:
- John Adams Road which commemorates Private John Adams, a 19-year-old infantryman who tragically lost his life during World War II when Port Hedland was targeted in Japanese air raids in 1942. This naming pays tribute to his service and sacrifice.
- Dixon Drive, which is a nod to the well-known Dixon’s Caravan Park, shop and roadhouse that served locals and travellers from the late 1960s. The site, fondly remembered by many, was originally developed by the late Cecil John Dixon, and the name continues to hold strong recognition in the community.
- Flyboy Road, which is a creative tribute to the daring aviators of the 1930s who used the Port Hedland racecourse aerodrome. Among them were iconic figures such as Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, whose legendary flights in the Southern Cross aircraft left an indelible mark on Australian aviation history.
Mayor Peter Carter said the road names were a celebration of Port Hedland’s rich heritage.
“Each of these names tells a story of service, community, and a pioneering spirit,” he said.
“As our town continues to grow and evolve, it’s vital we continue to honour those who laid the foundations and shaped our Town’s identity.”
Pending Landgate's approval, these names will be officially adopted as part of the development of the Airport Precinct
