The Town of Port Hedland’s unwavering commitment to public health and community wellbeing has been rewarded with its Environmental Health team winning the State Environmental Health Team Award for Excellence.

The prestigious award recognises environmental health teams that go above and beyond their day-to-day responsibilities, delivering exceptional outcomes for their communities and whose work has made a meaningful difference over the past year.

Acting Director Regulatory Services Chaz Roberts said the award was well-deserved recognition for a team whose work often happened behind the scenes.

“I am incredibly proud of our Environmental Health team, and this state recognition is a testament to their expertise, persistence and genuine care for the community they serve,” Mr Roberts said.

The Town’s Environmental Health team plays a vital role in protecting public health across the community. Their work spans a broad range of responsibilities, from working closely with local food businesses to ensure food safety standards are met, to supporting home-based businesses with hygiene compliance.

The team also delivers extensive mosquito management programs, including surveillance, testing, fogging and treatment, often outside standard working hours, to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne disease.

In addition, they regularly monitor and test water quality at the Town’s aquatic facilities, ensuring residents and visitors can safely enjoy swimming during the warmer months.

Alongside these core functions, the team provides public health education, undertakes environmental monitoring, and investigates matters relating to disease control, housing standards, nuisances and water quality.

The awards were presented at Environmental Health Australia’s State Conference at the Parmelia Hilton earlier today.
