The Town of Port Hedland has received $37,210 in National Disaster Risk Reduction Grant funding to strengthen the Hedland community’s preparedness for natural disasters.

The Ready Hedland! project will aim to strengthen community resilience in Port Hedland against storm tide impacts from cyclonic weather events, through the community design of storm tide markers and a co-created community awareness and action campaign.

The project will encourage residents to prepare and evacuate to a safe location above the tidal surge or flood level, prior to a significant cyclonic event.

Storm tide markers will be installed in six locations in Port Hedland, Cooke Point and Pretty Pool, depicting forecast tidal surge heights across impact scenarios, accompanied by tidal surge impact maps.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the grant funding as a positive step forward towards strengthening Hedland’s natural disaster preparedness for the future.

“The Town has received $37,210 in National Disaster Risk Reduction Grant funding to co-design storm tide markers and co-create a community awareness and action campaign to raise awareness of the importance of evacuating to a safe location prior to a significant cyclonic event.

“In 2019, Tropical Cyclone Veronica reminded us of our susceptibility to the impacts of tropical cyclones, particularly storm surges and coastal erosion. We expect these impacts to intensify into the future, therefore it’s vital we implement practical solutions in our community to keep local residents safe.

“I look forward to updating the community on the implementation of Ready Hedland! moving forward.”

“I’d like to thank Federal Minister for Emergency Management and National Recovery and Resilience Senator the Hon. Bridget McKenzie and State Minister for Emergency Services the Hon. Stephen Dawson MLC for supporting the Town’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the Hedland community’s natural disaster preparedness.”
