Town depot expansion set to improve community amenity

Published on Friday, 20 November 2020 at 3:40:22 PM

Improved community amenity and a new animal management facility will be delivered as part of the Town’s Depot Masterplan, with works having recently started at the site.

In line with a strategic commitment to deliver for a growing population, the Town has recognised a critical need to expand space, safety and accessibility at the facility.

Projected increases in future staffing levels require additional working space to successfully deliver a high standard of community services into the future. A new, modern office will include extra space, new technology and conferencing capabilities in line with other Town sites.

The Animal Management Facility will replace an aging facility which has housed cats and dogs above capacity for a number of years. The new facility will include temperature control, separate cat and dog sections, a vet’s room and two sizeable shaded exercise areas.

Local building and construction business MJW Building was awarded the contract to complete the works, together with Architect Hodge Collard Preston.

Funding for the project was approved through the Town’s annual FY2020/21 budget process, with an estimated total project cost of $10.2 million.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomes the move to the next stage of delivery for the Town depot site.

“The Depot Masterplan ensures future facilities and requirements of the Town are planned for and developed in-line with relevant facility standards and community needs.

“The Town Rangers provide the vital service of responding to stray cats and dogs, so I’m so pleased animal welfare will be improved with the construction of the new, temperature controlled Animal Management Facility.

“With record public infrastructure investment projects on the horizon, it is imperative for the Town’s Depot to provide a high standard of safety, working space, accessibility and amenity for current and future workforces.

“The Development of the Depot Masterplan ensures the organisation continues to provide essential community services, allowing for future planning and expansion.
