South Hedland has been transformed into a vibrant canvas of creativity thanks to a community-driven public art project that celebrated young talent, diverse stories, and the power of the arts in regional WA.

Made possible through funding from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC), the South Hedland Public Art Project brought together young people, professional artists, and community members in a multi-disciplinary initiative that combined photography, mural art, and creative workshops.

The project, facilitated by Camera Story and Honey’s Mural Co., offered vital opportunities for young people to build artistic skills, engage in mentorship, and showcase their work to the wider community. Activities included photography workshops, a Youth Week exhibition, a large-scale paste-up photo installation unveiled at Celebrate Hedland, and a stunning public mural co-designed and painted with the help of local youth.

These outcomes not only highlighted the creative talents of Hedland’s emerging artists but also fostered a sense of inclusion and cultural pride. By celebrating local stories and activating public spaces with colourful, community-led art, the initiative has helped lay the foundation for a more dynamic and culturally rich South Hedland.

The South Hedland Public Art Project has already sparked momentum for future arts programming, with participants expressing strong interest in more creative opportunities.

The Town of Port Hedland extends its thanks to DLGSC for supporting this impactful initiative, which has helped shape a more inclusive and inspiring arts culture in the Pilbara.
