The Town of Port Hedland has recorded its strongest month for building activity in more than a decade, with 61 building applications processed in July 2026 - the highest monthly total since 2014.

The milestone reflects sustained development activity across Hedland, with strong interest and investment occurring across residential, commercial and industrial sectors.

The applications cover a broad range of development activity, including residential apartments, commercial and industrial projects, occupancy permits, demolition permits and associated building approvals.

Together, the applications represent a total construction value of approximately $35.22 million.

Mayor Jacinta Behrend said the level of development activity demonstrated that businesses, investors and residents continued to see value and opportunity in Hedland’s future.

"Processing 61 building applications in a single month is a significant achievement and a clear sign of confidence in Port Hedland's future.

"From new homes to commercial and industrial developments, these projects are helping to create jobs, stimulate economic activity and support the continued growth of our community,” Mayor Behrend said.

The largest project among the 61 applications is a $7.67 million residential development by Azzura (Platform Constructions).

The project will deliver 14 new, four-bedroom, two-bathroom single-storey homes, each with a carport and fencing, across Eagle Avenue, Raven Street and Stork Road in South Hedland.

"Housing supply remains a critical priority for our community, and new residential developments such as this help deliver much-needed housing stock while supporting local employment and economic activity,” said Mayor Behrend.

The strong July result is also expected to provide flow-on benefits for local contractors, suppliers and service providers, supporting jobs and economic growth across the region.

A significant proportion of the month's applications also related to swimming pools, reflecting the Town's ongoing intensive pool and spa compliance program to ensure safety barriers meet legislative requirements and help keep residents safe.

The Town welcomes development that supports the growth of the local economy, increases housing availability, enhances community liveability, and remains committed to working with industry to facilitate quality projects that benefit Hedland now and into the future.
