Intensive pool and spa inspection program underway

Pool and spa owners in Hedland are being reminded to check their safety barriers, with the Town rolling out an intensive 12-week inspection program to help protect local families.

Over the coming months, residents with pools and spas due for inspection will be contacted as part of the scheduled compliance program.

These inspections are not new; they are a legislative requirement carried out at least once every four years to ensure barriers remain safe and effective.

The program is designed to reduce the risk of drowning, particularly among young children.

Why inspections matter:

Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death for young children, with many incidents occurring in backyard pools. Safety barriers play a critical role as a secondary line of protection by helping prevent unsupervised access.

Regular inspections ensure fences, gates and latches continue to meet strict safety standards and give homeowners an opportunity to fix issues before they become hazards.

What homeowners can do now:

With inspections underway, pool and spa owners are encouraged to take a few simple steps to prepare:

  • Remove climbable objects such as pot plants, outdoor furniture or barbecues from near fences
  • Check that gates are self-closing and self-latching
  • Make sure gates open outward, away from the pool or spa area
  • Inspect fencing for gaps, damage or wear that could allow access

Addressing these items early can help avoid delays during inspections and, most importantly, improve safety around water at home.

Working together for safer homes:

The Town will contact residents directly to arrange inspections and provide guidance if upgrades or repairs are needed. Local governments are responsible for enforcing pool safety laws and working with homeowners to achieve compliance.

Owners looking for more detailed guidance can access the State Government’s Rules for Pools and Spas handbook, which outlines safety barrier requirements and practical tips for maintaining compliant pool areas.

By taking proactive steps now, residents can help ensure their pool or spa area is safe, compliant and ready for inspection, contributing to a safer community for everyone.
