Hedland on the Horizon project to develop plans for the future

The Town of Port Hedland is seeking public feedback on how the West End in Port Hedland and South Hedland Town Centre (SHTC) could be developed over the next 10 years.

Hedland on the Horizon is a project to develop separate precinct structure plans for the West End and SHTC to provide a framework for future development of those areas.

Mayor Peter Carter said the plans would help to create precincts that supported liveability, economic growth and identity.

“They will outline where difference types of businesses, shops and offices could be located,” he said.

“Public open spaces are also important because we want places for young people to play, for people to exercise and families to relax and connect.”

The plans are also a way to identify how and where people access services such as childcare, healthcare, sporting and community centres.

Development of the West End will continue to be limited by the parameters defined by the West End Improvement Scheme. This includes restrictions on new sensitive uses such as childcare and permanent residential housing, however there are significant opportunities including adaptation of existing buildings and further development of the Marina Precinct.

SHTC is identified in the Town's local planning strategy as a regional centre and is a place where residential and commercial uses can coexist. There are opportunities for regional services and facilities to be developed given the mix of vacant land and redevelopment sites. This includes medium to high density housing.

Mayor Carter said community feedback was vital in preparing the plans.

“We are asking locals, businesses and other community groups to share their ideas, he said.

“The Town is committed to showing how that feedback will help shape the plans and reflect Hedland’s future needs.”

People will also have the opportunity to gain more information about Hedland on the Horizon at the Town’s booth at Spinifex Spree carnival on Friday 25 July and Saturday 26 July.

Pop-up sessions will be held at the Port Hedland Boulevard on Saturday 26 July from 10:00am-12:00pm and at the South Hedland Shopping Centre on Sunday 27 July from 10:00am-2:00pm. A youth focused drop-in session will be held at the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub on Wednesday, 30 July from 3:00pm-5:00pm.
