Hedland came to play!

Shay Gap Park came alive with laughter, colour, and connection as we celebrated The World’s Biggest Play Day on Thursday 15 May.

More than 450 families and little ones gathered for the free community event filled with joy, discovery and togetherness – all part of National Families Week 2025.

The event was a beautiful reminder of what makes Hedland special — our strong sense of community and the amazing support networks available for families at every stage of life.

With support from the Town of Port Hedland, JD Hardie Youth & Community Hub, Child and Parent Centre South Hedland, and many more local partners, the event showcased how Hedland is a place where families can grow, thrive and feel supported.

“We look forward to this event every year – it’s the biggest play date in Hedland!” Libby, mother of two, said.

“It gives me ideas for learning through play at home – and I get to connect with other parents too!” Annabelle, mother of one, said.

“This is my first time attending, I am here with my granddaughter. I’m blown away by the services on offer,” said Margaret, nanna to Lucy.

This year’s National Families Week theme Lending a hand to thrive: supporting each other came to life throughout the morning.  Events like these remind us that when we come together, everyone benefits – especially our youngest community members.

Thank you to everyone who joined us — and to the incredible local organisations who help make Hedland a wonderful place to raise a family.
