The Town of Port Hedland has been named a finalist in the 2026 Waste Sorted Awards in the Local Government Award category, recognising excellence in waste avoidance, resource recovery and positive waste management outcomes.

This recognition reflects the significant transformation of the South Hedland Landfill in recent years, with major investments in infrastructure, safety, resource recovery and community education helping create a cleaner, safer and more efficient facility for our community.

Improvements have included expanded battery and e-waste recycling programs, upgraded facilities, improved traffic management, enhanced safety measures and ongoing waste education initiatives.

The Town has also continued to invest in sustainability initiatives across our community, including recently endorsing a new three-year partnership with Care For Hedland to support environmental programs, conservation activities and community education.

A huge congratulations to our Waste and Resource Recovery team, partners and community members who continue to play a part in reducing waste, increasing recycling and helping build a more sustainable future for Hedland.

Winners will be announced at the Waste Sorted Awards Gala on 10 September.
