The Town of Port Hedland will continue working with the State Government and Main Roads WA to progress safety and transport improvements along Wilson Street and Redbank Bridge.
At Wednesday night’s Ordinary Council meeting, a motion was passed endorsing a number of priorities, including:
- upgrades to the Wilson Street and Cooke Point Drive intersection;
- duplication of Wilson Street between the Great Northern Highway interchange and McGregor Street;
- duplication of Redbank Bridge;
- a shared path/dual-use path across the bridge as part of future upgrades; and
- pedestrian and cycle barriers on one or both bridges.
The decision builds on discussions already underway between the Town and Main Roads WA about safety improvements at the Cooke Point Drive/Wilson Street intersection and the longer-term future of the Wilson Street corridor.
Mayor Jacinta Behrend said Council's decision provided a clear position for the Town's ongoing discussions with the State Government and Main Roads.
“Tragically two people have lost their lives at this intersection in recent years, including a motorcyclist in early October, and Council wants to see practical improvements that make this area safer for our community,” Mayor Behrend said.
“Wilson Street and Redbank Bridge are important connections for our community, and we want to make sure we are planning ahead for Port Hedland’s future.
“There has already been positive engagement with Main Roads around the intersection and the longer-term Wilson Street corridor, and we want to keep working together to progress the best outcome.”
Main Roads has advised the Town that design and costing work has progressed for duplication of Wilson Street through to McGregor Street and a new Redbank Bridge.
“Council has now set out what we would like to see considered as part of that bigger picture, particularly safer connections for pedestrians and cyclists,” Mayor Behrend said.
“These are significant projects that require collaboration and long-term planning. Our role is to keep working constructively with the State Government and Main Roads and make sure Port Hedland’s needs are part of those conversations.”
