Hedland students rolled up their sleeves and dug into sustainability this week as renowned environmental educator and television presenter Costa Georgiadis brought his infectious energy and expert knowledge to local classrooms.
The Town recently welcomed Costa to Baler Primary School, Port Hedland Primary School and Hedland Senior High School, where students engaged in hands-on learning focused on practical sustainability.
Costa, best known as the much-loved host of ABC’s Gardening Australia, is a landscape architect, author and passionate advocate for environmental education.
With his trademark enthusiasm and deep commitment to connecting people with nature, Costa uses his platform to inspire communities to embrace sustainable practices and care for their local environments.
During his Hedland visit, Costa led interactive sessions covering soil preparation, water-wise gardening, seedling propagation and plant care, while also reinforcing the importance of building a strong connection to place, particularly within the Pilbara’s unique environment.
Mayor Jacinta Behrend said the visit was a valuable opportunity to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards in Hedland.
“Having someone as engaging and knowledgeable as Costa visit our schools is incredibly special,” Mayor Behrend said.
“He has a unique ability to connect with young people and make sustainability both practical and exciting.
“These kinds of experiences help empower our students with the skills and confidence to care for their environment, both now and into the future.
“Opportunities like this not only enhance student learning but also reinforce our community’s commitment to innovation, engagement and environmental stewardship.”
This initiative was made possible through the dedication and passion of the Town’s sustainability team, who worked behind the scenes to facilitate the visit and integrate meaningful environmental education opportunities for local students.
Their ongoing commitment continues to strengthen the Town’s approach to sustainability, both internally and across the community.
By delivering accessible, practical knowledge, the program aligns with the Town’s broader sustainability objectives, empowering younger generations with the skills and confidence to adopt greener lifestyles.
