The Town of Port Hedland marked the start of National Families Week with a vibrant and well attended World’s Biggest Play Day at Shay Gap Park on Friday 15 May.

Held from 10am to 12pm, the event brought together 485 community members and 30 local stakeholders for a morning dedicated to connection, play and community spirit.

Families enjoyed a wide range of free activities, including arts and crafts, outdoor play, a sensory inclusion zone, face painting and interactive experiences delivered by local organisations, emergency services and community groups. A variety of food options were also available, creating a welcoming environment for attendees of all ages.

Town of Port Hedland Mayor, Jacinta Behrend, said the event highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for families to connect and engage with their community.

“National Families Week is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the role families play in our community, and events like World’s Biggest Play Day create welcoming spaces for people to come together, connect and have fun,” she said.

“It was fantastic to see so many families and local organisations involved, creating a vibrant and inclusive event that reflects the spirit of Hedland.”

The event also highlighted the strength of local partnerships, with 30 stakeholders coming together to deliver services, share information and engage directly with residents in a relaxed, family friendly setting.

World’s Biggest Play Day is part of National Families Week, which celebrates the vital role families play in Australian society and promotes connection, inclusion and wellbeing.

The Town of Port Hedland, Child and Parent Centre South Hedland and The Y co-led the event and thank all participating organisations and community members for helping deliver a successful, well-attended event and contributing to a strong, connected community.
