Hedland residents interested in running for council are invited to a Candidate Information Session to gain insight into the role of an elected member and how local government operates, including how decisions are made and how entities are regulated by the State Government.
Town of Port Hedland Commissioner Ronald Yuryevich AM will attend and share insights from his local government experience, having served on the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Council from 1988 to 2015, including more than 19 years as Mayor.
Commissioner Yuryevich is encouraging Hedland residents to consider standing as candidates in the upcoming Local Government election on 28 March.
Sharing his personal perspective on being an elected member, Commissioner Yuryevich said serving on a council was an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution, help solve local challenges, and support long-term progress.
“Having a diverse mix of candidates — people with ideas, energy, and a genuine commitment to our town’s future — will help build a council that best reflects this community,” he said.
The session will include general information about the nomination process ahead of the Town of Port Hedland Local Government election on Saturday 28 March 2026. Nominations open Thursday 5 February and close Wednesday 12 February 2026.
The candidate information session is on Wednesday 4 February, from 7:00pm-8:30pm at the Civic Centre in Port Hedland. It will be livestreamed for anyone who is unable to attend in person.
The session is designed to help prospective candidates understand the nomination process, the responsibilities of elected members, and what to expect as part of serving on council.
“If you’re passionate about Port Hedland and want to play a role in shaping its direction, I strongly encourage you to consider nominating,” Commissioner Yuryevich said.
Candidate nominations for the nine positions on the Town of Port Hedland Council – including Mayor – are open from 5-12 February.
