The Town of Port Hedland is taking a proactive approach to safeguarding the region’s economic future, with the development of a new Economic Resilience and Recovery Plan (ERRP).
Recognising both the opportunities and challenges of doing business locally, the plan will strengthen the region’s capacity to respond to and recover from potential significant economic disruptions or natural disasters, such as cyclones.
Mayor Jacinta Behrend said the initiative reflected a clear commitment to planning ahead and ensuring the community and local economy are well-positioned to recover quickly and effectively in the event of disruptions.
“Port Hedland is a resilient community, but we also know that economic recovery following a major event can take months or even years.”
“This plan is about laying the groundwork now, so we’re not starting from scratch when challenges arise. It’s about being prepared, coordinated and ready to support our community and local businesses when it matters most.”
“By taking a coordinated, strategic approach, we can reduce recovery timeframes, support local jobs and ensure essential services and amenities are restored as quickly as possible,” Mayor Behrend said.
While the Town has well-established arrangements for disaster preparedness and immediate response focused on protecting lives and restoring essential infrastructure - this initiative addresses a critical next phase: longer-term economic recovery.
The ERRP will provide a clear, practical framework to guide this process, including:
The Town will work closely with local businesses and the community throughout the development of the plan, recognising that those on the ground are best placed to identify what’s needed for effective recovery.
Feedback will directly inform actions to support local businesses, build economic resilience and improve the Town’s ability to recover from future events.
