Support from BHP will ensure the Town of Port Hedland can continue to deliver high quality events and programs to increase liveability.
The BHP Events Partnership Agreement 2026-2028 was endorsed by Commissioners at the March Ordinary Council meeting.
The partnership involves BHP contributing $300,000 per year over the next three years to support the Spinifex Spree carnival, a Major Winter Event, the Hedland Sports Awards and the Sunset Food Markets, as well as supporting additional programming at the Matt Dann Theatre and Cinema.
Chair of commissioners Jessica Shaw said the Town was committed to delivering family friendly events and programs that helped foster increased community connection.
“The Town and BHP have collaborated over many years to help deliver these high-quality events and programs and the community really embraces them,” Commissioner Shaw said.
BHP General Manager Port Dan Mossman said the renewed partnership reflected BHP’s ongoing support for Hedland and the people who call it home.
“These events are a big part of what makes Hedland such a great place to live. They bring people together, celebrate local talent and create moments that families and friends can really enjoy,” Mr Mossman said.
“BHP has been part of this community for a long time and backing initiatives that strengthen connection and liveability is a key part of our commitment to supporting thriving communities.”
Events, Arts and Culture Manager Khristle Barr thanked BHP for its support as the Town’s packed winter events season continued to grow.
“This year we have five Sunset Food Markets at Marapikurrinya Park and they are always a popular way for the community to come together, relax and enjoy and ambient atmosphere with terrific food, drink and entertainment on offer,” she said.
“The Hedland Sports Awards have grown year on year and is a terrific way to acknowledge and celebrate the wonderful sportsmen and sportswomen, as well as the umpires and volunteers, in our Hedland sporting community.”
Spinifex Spree is the largest and most popular event on the Hedland calendar with this year’s carnival on 24-25 July.
Details about a Major Winter Event for 2026 are expected to be finalised soon.
