Consultation on Statement of Objects and Reasons for 2020/21 (Closed)

Council have endorsed its rating strategy for 2020/21, which is now open for public consultation until 12pm Friday 22 May 2020.

The 2020/21 rating strategy continues the commitment to uniformity and equitability across categories while minimising financial strain in the community and securing the Town’s financial viability.

In line with State Government recommendations, the Town proposes nil increase to the rate in the dollar across all categories, recognising the economic impact of COVID-19 restrictions.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said this adopted item successfully balanced the need to maintain the Town’s financial viability, with the ongoing economic impact of COVID-19 in the community.

“As a Town, we understand that businesses and households across Hedland have been struck with uncertainty and financial strain as a result of COVID-19 restrictions and shutdowns. I’m pleased the 2020/21 Statement of Objects and Reasons proposes no increase to the rate in the dollar in any category.

“We recognise that members of households may have lost jobs or received reduced hours as a result of COVID-19 shutdowns, so we can all agree that now is not the time for any rates increase.

“I encourage all community members, including business and community groups, to view the Town’s proposals for rating in the 2020/21 financial year and submit your feedback.”

Consultation can be completed via post addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Town of Port Hedland, PO Box 41, Port Hedland WA 6721 marked Submission- Differential Rating 2020/21
