The Town of Port Hedland’s Regulatory Services team has demonstrated its wide-reaching impact across the community, with a busy start to 2025 delivering progress, protection and planning for the future.

From building approvals to food safety and sustainability, the team is showcasing how regulatory services isn’t just about regulation and compliance - but how it plays a vital role in shaping a healthy, safe and thriving Hedland community.

There have been more than $29 million in building approvals this calendar year to date, including the upcoming construction of 21 new homes in Elements Estate and Osprey Precincts.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Health team has had a busy first half of the year, particularly in the wake of tropical-ex cyclone Zelia, which required targeted efforts in drainage management and ongoing mosquito control.

The team spent more than 200 hours just on fogging, which was the most extensive control program to date.

Between March and May, officers conducted 24 food premise inspections and completed several complex investigations, working with businesses to ensure compliance and lift standards where required, safeguarding the health and wellbeing of the community.

Animal management continues to be a significant focus for the Town’s Rangers, with more than half of all job requests between March and May related to dogs.

During this period, 18 dogs were impounded and successfully returned to their owners, while eight dogs were rehomed in partnership with SAFE.

Mayor Peter Carter said the Regulatory Services team was instrumental in delivering services that kept Hedland running smoothly.

“Every approval, inspection, and ranger response have a ripple effect that improves the safety, liveability, and sustainability of our town,” he said.

“The ongoing efforts of Regulatory Services ensure Hedland remains ready for growth, resilient to challenges and responsive to community needs.”

The Sustainability unit also continues to deliver impactful projects in partnership and collaboration with Care for Hedland, such as the Sustainable Living Show Day, the installation of turtle friendly bollard lighting and ongoing efforts to reduce waste to landfill.
