Hedland residents are being urged to do their part in reducing the fire risk posed by batteries and other e-waste being disposed of in general waste bins.
South Hedland Landfill staff have noticed a surge in e-waste items mixed with general waste – and at times, in recycling bins.
Mayor Peter Carter said disposing e-waste in general bins not only harmed the environment but posed a significant safety risk to landfill staff.
“E-waste includes items such as mobile phones, computers, car batteries, TVs and printers,” Mayor Carter said.
“When mixed in with general waste, these devices can cause fires due to their hazardous materials and chemicals."
“South Hedland Landfill has dedicated e-waste bins, so when these are used correctly, parts of these items can be reused – ensuring a full circle process in sustainable recycling practices.”
In 2024, the Town partnered with EcoBatt under the National B-Cycle Battery Recycling Scheme to deliver dedicated bins for various e-waste items.
This initiative demonstrates the Town’s commitment to providing services that benefit the community and empower residents to make sustainable decisions.
South Hedland Landfill is open 7 days a week, with various dedicated bins for household e-waste items. Battery recycling bins are located at the Civic Centre, Wedgefield Administration Depot, Port and South Library, as well as the landfill.
