The Town of Port Hedland last week won the Best Regional Industry Contribution award at the 2023 Parks and Leisure Australia WA Awards of Excellence for its South Hedland Youth Placemaking Program.

The program is a community-led initiative focusing on providing quality public spaces for youth that are safe, inclusive and engaging.

Mayor Peter Carter said: “Young people in our community are one of our greatest assets. They are the future of Hedland and it is important the Town can provide areas for them to connect and have a strong sense of belonging."

This prestigious award recognises towns that make a significant contribution through community initiatives to the parks and leisure industry across various projects in play-spaces, events, tourism or facilities.

The Town was also finalists for three other awards:

  • Community Based Initiative of the Year for the South Hedland Youth Placemaking Program
  • The Playspace Award for South Hedland Skatepark
  • Best Regional Industry Contribution for Port Hedland Leisure.

“To have three other awards as finalists is a real credit to our team’s dedication to delivering outstanding facilities and programs for our community, and is a reflection of the hard-work our staff have put into the Town,” Mayor Carter said.

“The Town of Port Hedland is committed to enhancing the overall physical, psychological, and social wellbeing of our community, by offering dynamic recreational and sporting facilities and services to everyone.”

The awards recognise excellence in local government, and draws attention to the social, environmental, and financial advantages that leisure activities bring to the community.

Submissions must explain how the programs and facilities adopt a creative strategy or innovative idea to solve a particular need or problem, as well as highlight its successes and community benefits
