Town acts on tree pests across Hedland

The Town is actively responding to the presence of two common tree pests, Bagworm Moth and Mastotermes Termites that have been identified across both Port and South Hedland.

These pests, while not unusual in the region, have shown increased activity, particularly affecting Delonix trees, which are currently the most impacted species.

To date, over 600 trees have been treated, with works still ongoing as part of a coordinated response to manage and control the outbreak.

The Town is working closely with Want Pest and Hedland Pest Control, two locally based specialists, to carry out treatments and inspections.

In addition to external support, Town staff have undergone awareness training to identify early signs of infestation. This proactive approach ensures that any emerging issues are quickly detected and managed before they can spread further.

Importantly, the treatment methods and chemicals used are safe for public spaces and have been carefully selected to minimise environmental impact. There have been no reports of damage to trees as a result of the chemicals or from the pests themselves.

The Town’s Parks and Gardens team will continue to monitor affected areas, and contractors will carry out treatments until the infestation subsides.
