The South Hedland landfill will reopen on Sundays and have extended Monday-Friday opening hours from 2 October.
There has been demand from commercial operators to reopen the landfill on Sundays, with 95% of respondents to a recent survey in favour of the proposal. Demand has also been high from the general public for a return to Sunday trading.
At the August Ordinary Council Meeting, councillors voted in favour of the extending opening hours as well as removal of the after-hours skip bins outside the facility to within the Landfill boundary.
Mayor Peter Carter said the Town was committed to providing services that benefited the community.
“The Landfill will now open from 8:00am-2:00pm on Sundays and will open 30 minutes earlier from Monday-Friday,” Mayor Carter said.
As part of the change, the Landfill will be closed on New Year’s Day, adding to Christmas Day and Good Friday as the only public holidays it is not open.
Mayor Carter said the after-hours skip bins at the Landfill would be phased out over the coming months, having been problematic for some time.
“We have had health and safety concerns with large volumes of waste being left after-hours, people retrieving rubbish from the bins and commercial operators dumping waste in the bins, avoiding paying tip fees,” he said.
“It has also been time consuming for staff who have had to spend two hours a day cleaning waste that has been removed from the bins or dumped illegally.
“We expect the after-hours bins will be removed by the end of this year.”
Mayor Carter said the after-hours bins did not align with the Town’s newly adopted Waste Management Strategy 2023-2028, which prioritises separation of waste.
As part of the changes, the last-vehicle requirement 15 minutes before closing time will also be removed.
Concept designs for a new Community Transfer Station were endorsed at the July Council meeting.
South Hedland Landfill opening hours (from 2 October 2023):
- Monday to Friday: 7:00am-4:30pm
- Saturday, Sunday and public holidays: 8:00am-2:00pm
- Public holidays closed: Christmas Day, Good Friday, New Year’s Day.
