This National Science Week, the Town is shining a spotlight on the world of science and technology by showcasing the incredible work of our science-based teams and how they keep our community safe, sustainable and thriving.
The Town's highly skilled staff utilise cutting-edge technology and scientific expertise across a range of areas, from environmental services, sustainability, waste and infrastructure, to investigate the unknown, discover patterns and solve problems.
To celebrate this important week, Town staff in these areas delivered a presentation at Baler Primary School to students on 13 August to showcase the fun and important work they do on a day-to-day basis.
Our Environmental Health team works tirelessly to protect residents, often in ways that go unnoticed. They manage mosquito populations to prevent the spread of vector-borne diseases, using advanced biological control methods such as drone technology and testing - that are both effective and environmentally friendly.
Their rigorous food safety and hygiene assessments, public health investigations and environmental audits help us to understand invisible risks and contamination, ensuring all of our food, air, water and soil are clean and safe.
In the sustainability area, the Town regularly maps our carbon footprint, to help us understand and reduce our environmental impact. Waste reduction initiatives are transforming how we handle resources, while detailed flora and fauna surveys are conducted to ensure our unique ecosystems are protected for future generations.
Ever wondered what happens in our waste area? Our team uses sophisticated landfill greenhouse gas modelling to minimise emissions and keep our air clean. Air shed assessments further ensure Port Hedland’s environment remains healthy, balancing industrial activity with the needs of our community.
Beneath our streets, our Infrastructure team maps systems and groundwater to prevent flooding and protect our water resources. This critical work keeps Hedland resilient, even in the face of extreme weather. It’s a complex task that demands precision, expertise, and a forward-thinking approach.
From battling mosquitoes to mapping our carbon footprint, our staff’s expertise is the backbone of Port Hedland’s health and environmental progress.
National Science Week runs from the 9-17 August, and its purpose is to celebrate the amazing work science, engineering, mathematics, technology and innovation plays in all our lives.
