Celebrating International Youth Day: Empowering Hedland’s Young Champions

This International Youth Day, the Town of Port Hedland is proud to celebrate the incredible achievements of our young residents—and the role our Community Champions Grant Program plays in helping them reach new heights.

Living in a remote regional centre like Port Hedland can present challenges, especially when it comes to accessing high-level sporting and recreational opportunities. But through targeted support, our youth are proving that distance is no barrier to ambition.

The Community Champions Grant Program provides financial assistance to young people and local clubs, enabling participation in elite competitions and development pathways across Australia and beyond. These grants not only help cover travel and participation costs—they also foster confidence, resilience, and community pride.

Here are just a few recent examples of Hedland youth making their mark with the assistance of the town’s Community Champions Grant Program :

  • Brae Brittain – $2,000 to attend the KL Invitational 2024
  • Maia Hunter – $1,500 to compete in the DoorDash NYC Touch Nationals
  • Hedland Taekwondo Club – $4,666.67 to attend the Australian National Taekwondo Championships
  • Cruz Brahim – $2,000 to race in the Australia Supercross YZ65 2024
  • James, Thomas & Aidan Hawes – $2,385 to represent the region at the Football West Country Champs

These stories reflect more than just sporting success—they highlight how access to recreation and competition contributes to youth liveability, mental wellbeing, and a strong sense of belonging.

The Town remains committed to supporting our young people to thrive, no matter where they live. Through programs like Community Champions Grant, we’re investing in the future of Hedland—one young champion at a time.
