Calling young people to help shape Hedland’s future

Young people across Hedland are invited to step forward and share their voice by joining the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) — a group of local young people passionate about making Hedland a better place for everyone.

Since forming in 2023, the YAC has played an active role in community conversations, events and projects that support the needs, ideas and wellbeing of young people in Hedland. Members work together to give feedback on youth activities, services and local initiatives, helping ensure young voices are represented in community decision making.

The YAC is now welcoming new members aged 15 to 24 who live in the Town of Port Hedland. Young people who enjoy being involved in their community, whether through sport, volunteering, clubs, arts, cultural groups or youth activities are encouraged to apply.

The YAC is a safe and inclusive space, and applications are welcomed from young people of all backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, culturally diverse young people, LGBTQIA+ youth, young people with disability, and those with lived experience.

Reflecting on the impact of the Youth Advisory Council, Manager of Youth and Community Services Anna Savill said the group continues to be a driving force for a more vibrant, inclusive and forward‑thinking Hedland.

“Hedland’s young people aren’t just the leaders of tomorrow, they’re shaping our community today,” she said. “They bring courage, creativity and an understanding of what young people need to feel safe, connected and proud of where they live. The Youth Advisory Council gives them more than a seat at the table. It gives them influence. It empowers them to spark ideas, challenge the status quo and create positive change that will be felt by their peers now, and by generations of young people to come.”

Youth Advisory Council member Regan Hulse said being part of the council had helped them understand how valuable young voices were.

“Before joining YAC, I never realised how important our ideas were in shaping the community,” Regan said.

“It’s empowering to know that what we say actually matters, and that we can help make Hedland better for other young people.”

Members meet once a fortnight. Being part of the YAC offers opportunities to build leadership skills, work as part of a team, contribute to youth events and planning, and provide input on projects that affect the community. Members also receive an honorarium payment for their time and commitment.

Young people can apply by submitting a written or video application, and support is available for those who may need help accessing a phone, internet or communication tools.
