The Hedland community is being invited to come together in a powerful show of unity on Wednesday 7 May, for the annual Hedland Says ‘No’ to Family Violence event.

This event aims to promote community safety, drive important conversations and foster change against domestic and family violence.

The event will be presented by the Hedland Family Violence Action Group (HFVAG) which is a grassroots collective of local stakeholders working together to prevent and combat family and domestic violence in the Hedland community.

Chair of the Hedland Family Violence Action Group, and Relationships Australia WA Coordinator, Bec Richards said: “This event is a powerful opportunity for our community to stand united against family and domestic violence.”

“There is never an excuse for abuse. By standing with victim-survivors, we hope to empower more people to seek the support they need to live free from violence.”

“Creating a safe, violence-free community in Hedland is a responsibility we all share.”

Town of Port Hedland Mayor, Peter Carter said the community’s continued support for the event highlighted the importance of taking a united approach.

“Family and domestic violence has no place in our community. Events like this send a strong message that we stand in solidarity with survivors and are committed to building a safer future for all.” Mayor Carter said

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, in 2022-2023 one woman was killed every 11 days, and one man was killed every 91 days - by an intimate partner or someone they knew.

The event will begin at South Hedland Town Square from 3:00pm and feature a community march, speeches and activities for the whole family, while providing an important platform to remember the lives lost to domestic and family violence and to call for change.

The Town of Port Hedland is dedicated to working with all stakeholders and community members to enhance safety, respect and community wellbeing.
