New data strengthens Town’s case for targeted investment in Port Hedland

The Town of Port Hedland will ramp up its push to State and Federal Governments, using new data to call for urgent investment in housing, workforce and infrastructure as growth pressures intensify.

A new Cumulative Impact Model (CIM), prepared by REMPLAN, shows demand from multiple major projects is outpacing housing supply, driving high costs and making it harder to attract and retain workers, particularly in essential services.

Workforce demand is expected to rise further as projects progress, adding to existing pressures and reinforcing the need for coordinated action.

Mayor Jacinta Behrend said the data provides a strong, evidence-based platform to secure the support Hedland needs to manage growth.

“Hedland is entering an exciting period of growth, but we know our community is already feeling the pressure, particularly when it comes to housing and access to services,” Mayor Behrend said.

“This new data gives us a clear and compelling picture of those challenges, so we can strongly advocate for the investment and support needed to ensure our community continues to thrive.”

The CIM will now guide the Town’s approach, clearly identifying where funding, policy support and coordinated planning are required to support sustainable growth.

By capturing the cumulative impact of concurrent developments, the findings strengthen the Town’s case to all levels of government and industry, highlighting the urgency for timely and coordinated investment.

The Town also recognises and thanks the Cook Labor Government’s commitment to the Pilbara through the '7 Cities Vision', including the GROH Housing and Western Edge Stage 1 for Port Hedland, with the findings of this report reinforcing the importance of continued and expanded investment to support the region’s growth.

Supported by the Pilbara Development Commission as a major funding partner, the assessment builds a stronger evidence base to support future investment decisions across the region.

The CIM was developed collaboratively between the Pilbara Development Commission, Regional Development Australia, the Town of Port Hedland and the City of Karratha.
