Harmony Week brought colour, culture and community together in Hedland, with more than 700 people celebrating the many cultures that make our town home.

The atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and full of pride. The event opened with a vibrant Indian dance performed by students from Baler Primary School, setting the tone for a night that honoured tradition, storytelling and shared experiences.

The Tongan Community Brass Band led a joyful march around the venue, followed by a parade showcasing the incredible diversity that makes up the Hedland community.

Throughout the evening, audiences were treated to 13 cultural performances, featuring singing, dancing and live music played on instruments such as the tabla, keyboards, didgeridoo and brass instruments.

Uncle Bruce and dancers travelled from Strelley community to perform a cultural blessing, while the Hedland Indian Dancers were awarded the Community Choice Award for their graceful water dance. The detail, colour and care put into cultural dress and

performances had the crowd clapping, singing along and celebrating together.

Food from across the world was another highlight, with long lines forming as people enjoyed flavours from home or tried something new for the first time.

Community organisations including Well Women’s Centre, Bloodwood Tree, Panaceum, Pilbara Community Legal Services, Hedland Multicultural Association and Royal Life Saving were also on hand, offering information, activities and connection throughout the night.

Director Community Services Alison Banks said Harmony Week was a powerful reminder of what made Hedland special.

“Harmony Week is about coming together, learning from one another and celebrating the cultures that shape our community,” Ms Banks said.

“Seeing people of all ages and backgrounds sharing stories, food, music and laughter shows the strength and pride that exists right across Hedland.”

The event was delivered by the Town of Port Hedland, led by Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator and proudly sponsored by Pilbara Community Legal Services, providing a meaningful opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the cultures that shape life in Hedland.
