The redevelopment plans announced today for Hedland Senior High School will enhance opportunities for Hedland to grow and prosper into the future.

Town of Port Hedland Mayor Jacinta Behrend said the announcement of $80 million through the Resources Community Investment Initiative was hugely important to help economic and residential growth in Hedland.

The redevelopment includes new design and technology facilities, with a full scope of upgrades to be developed.

“Improved investment in education has been one of the Town’s advocacy platforms for a number of years,” Mayor Behrend said.

“Community feedback has highlighted the demand for more access to education and training in Hedland, so this announcement is a major step forward for local families."

“Access to high quality education is a huge factor in being able to attract and retain a residential workforce."

“Hedland Senior High School is our only secondary school, and as such it is essential the school can continue to meet demand and deliver quality outcomes for all students.”

Speaking of BHP's overall investment $160m into Hedland through the RCII, BHP Western Australian Iron Ore Asset President, Tim Day said: “These projects will transform how Port Hedland locals experience education, recreation and everyday life in the town – ensuring modern facilities that support a thriving regional centre."

“They will reward our teachers and students, deliver long-term community benefits, and help to support the workers who keep Port Hedland running.”

Data has shown a large proportion of students require additional support due to socio-educational disadvantage.

“Investment like this ensure no Hedland student will be left behind in a remote, regional community that faces unique challenges.

“The Town commends BHP on this investment, and we will continue to work in collaboration to get the best outcomes for students and families,” said Tim Day.
