An artwork embodying the past, present and future identity of Port Hedland created by local artist, Samantha Boon on behalf of Portside Town Team and The Junction Co., has been selected as the local entry for submission into WALGA’s statewide 2022 Showcase in Pixels Competition.

Ms. Boon’s artwork will be displayed as a representation of Port Hedland on the iconic digital tower in the heart of Yagan Square, Perth CBD, from Monday 19 September until Sunday 9 October 2022.

The Competition is one of WA’s largest ongoing community arts projects, widely acknowledged as one of the most colourful and vibrant displays throughout the year.

“The inspiration behind my illustration is based on Portside, heart of the West End, the rich history of Port Hedland, its diverse culture, mining industry and of course the waterways, which is a huge part of the Hedland community,” Ms. Boon said.

“Drawing on the Portside identity and colour pallet, the composition captures all of Hedland’s beauty, both natural and man-made. Blending pattern and shapes with simple illustration, the image portrays the past, present and future of Port Hedland,” she said.

Mayor Peter Carter congratulated Ms. Boon on her artwork being selected as the winning local entry.

“I’d like to congratulate local artist, Samantha Boon, on creating such a vibrant artwork which has been selected as the Port Hedland entry into WALGA’s 2022 Showcase in Pixels Competition.

“The selection panel commented on how fun, bright and bold the design artwork is; clearly representing our port, marine life and amazing sunsets. Ms. Boon’s use of colour, creativity, composition and artistic merit were all mentioned by the panel.

“Submitted within the professional category, the colour palette and form incorporates brand elements of Portside: Heart of the West End, the place planning revitalisation project which has brought Port Hedland’s West End to life thanks to the work of the The Junction Co.

“Council are proud to support public art initiatives such as the Showcase in Pixels Competition, delivering on the strategic outcomes of the Town’s Arts and Culture Strategy.

“I’d also like to commend the work of The Junction Co., who have amplified the Portside identity and continue to program an illustrious program of initiatives at the Courthouse Gallery+Studio.

“I look forward to finding out who the statewide winner is on Monday 3 October; fingers crossed it’s Ms. Boon!”
