Turtle nesting season has arrived early in Hedland with confirmation of the first two nesting sites near Pretty Pool.
Mayor Peter Carter said turtle nesting season, which normally runs from November until March, was always an exciting time in Hedland.
“We are so lucky to have such an important breeding ground for the flatback turtles right on our doorstep,” Mayor Carter said.
“The turtles are a terrific drawcard for tourists to our region, as well as being popular attraction for locals.”
The Town of Port Hedland has partnered with Care for Hedland to install barriers around nesting sites to clearly mark them out to prevent unintentional damage by beachgoers.
In addition, the Town wants to ensure no off-road vehicles disturb the nesting sites and the area is now out-of-bounds to vehicles.
Dog-owners are also reminded that the nesting areas between Cemetery Beach and Pretty Pool/Four Mile are not off-leash areas and anyone running dogs off-lead will face infringements.
“We all have a responsibility to protect this important breeding ground for the turtles and their hatchlings,” Mayor Carter said.
Anyone witnessing off-road vehicles in the area is urged to contact Town Rangers, who will investigate and take action.
