The Town’s Local Planning Scheme No. 7 (Scheme) has been approved by Minister for Transport and Planning, the Hon. Rita Saffioti, and subsequently published in the Government Gazette.
The Scheme replaces the Town’s Local Planning Scheme No. 5 as the Town’s principal statutory planning document, setting out the way land is to be used and developed. It classifies areas for land use and includes provisions to coordinate infrastructure and development within the local government area.
The Scheme serves to implement the outcomes of the Town’s draft Local Planning Strategy (Strategy), which provides the rationale for the direction of growth and development in Hedland over the next 15 years. It is anticipated the Strategy will be endorsed by the Western Australian Planning Commission in the coming weeks.
The preparation of the Scheme was informed by the 2019 community engagement exercise, Shaping Hedland’s Future, which uncovered key insights and sentiments relating to land use planning.
Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the approval and gazettal of the Scheme.
“The Town’s Local Planning Scheme No. 7 is now the Town’s principal statutory planning document, taking a coordinated approach to land use planning.
“Hedland is positioned for significant growth in the years ahead, the result of a robust resources industry, resilience in the face of the global Covid pandemic, record investment in public infrastructure and a focus on attracting families. These growth factors require land use planning which strikes the right balance between the needs of the community, business and the environment.
“Key aims for the Scheme include facilitating the provision of high quality community facilities, complementing the primacy of the port, developing a hierarchy of activity centres, enhancing the value of the natural environment, improving connectivity and more.
“I’d like to thank Minister Safiotti for approving the Scheme, and look forward to seeing its positive impact on land use planning into the future.”
