Multiple initiatives from the Town of Port Hedland have supported a new GP clinic to open in South Hedland.
The Town provided a $60,000 grant from the Town’s Economic Development and Diversification Fund and well as subsidised GP housing to ensure the South Hedland clinic could open and provide much-needed medical care for residents.
The clinic, which is now accepting new patients, has a locum doctor onsite and will be further supported by additional GPs, each contracted for a minimum of four years.
Pathology services will be added in the coming weeks, further enhancing care offerings, and the clinic will provide bulk-billing to concession card holders and children under 16.
The grant, approved by Council at the 13 December 2023 Ordinary Council Meeting, contributed to fit-out costs for the new clinic premises.
Town of Port Hedland Mayor, Peter Carter said the clinic marked a significant milestone in improving the town’s healthcare services.
“Access to reliable healthcare is one of the most critical services in any community, and especially in a regional town like ours where recruitment and retention of medical professionals is an ongoing challenge,” Mayor Carter said.
“By supporting the opening of this new GP clinic, we are delivering on our commitment to ensure all Hedland residents can access high-quality health services close to home.”
The Town manages 10 GP houses in Hedland, all leased to medical service providers at subsidised rates. In October 2024, Council further reduced these rates as an added incentive to attract and retain doctors in the region.
“Our subsidised GP housing and financial support for medical services are strategic investments in the future of our town,” Mayor Carter said.
“We know that having consistent, local access to doctors improves not only physical wellbeing but also the overall liveability of Hedland.”
Richard Sykes, Business Development Manager for Radiant Doctors Group who has been leading the onboarding process for GP’s, said he and his team were excited to be able to deliver quality family healthcare to the Hedland community.
“We are focused on family and community health and look forward to the Hedland community being able to access primary health care without extended wait times, which will also alleviate some pressure on our emergency department,” he said.
The Town of Port Hedland remains committed to working alongside healthcare providers and other stakeholders to ensure the community has consistent and equitable access to essential services.
