Murals a lasting legacy of Weekender

Published on Friday, 21 April 2023 at 12:44:17 PM

Ten murals that tell the story of South Hedland will be a lasting legacy of the Town of Port Hedland’s Welcome to Hedland Weekender extravaganza from 12-14 May.

The weekender incorporates the annual Welcome to Hedland Community Expo and a Street Art Festival which will showcase the history and culture of South Hedland in recognition of the town’s 50th anniversary.

The Street Art Festival is being held in conjunction with No More Blank Walls, which will collaborate with local artists and youth to complete 6 of the 10 murals in and around the South Hedland Town Square.

The rich array of artists with varied background and skills who will be participating in the murals include local artists Lorna Dawson, Kimberly McKie, Ruby Djikarra Alderton and Bobbi Lockyer as well as street artists Art by Row, Jack Bromell, Ash Taylor, Ayres, Honey, Sugar and YoYo.

Mayor Peter Carter said the Welcome to Hedland Weekender was gearing up to be one of the best events on the Hedland calendar in 2023.

“Celebrating South Hedland’s rich history and cultural pride through these murals is a brilliant way to acknowledge the 50th anniversary of the gazetting of South Hedland,” Mayor Carter said.

“With live art, workshops, street art tours and artist talks, the Street Art Festival will be engaging, and the murals will help liven the South Hedland Town Square for years to come.”

Along with the Street Art Festival, the 50th anniversary will include the official launch of the Hedlander Memories book by the Older Wiser Library Seniors (OWLS).

The Welcome to Hedland Community Expo in the South Hedland Town Square is on from 5:00-8:00pm on Friday, 12 May, this is an opportunity to celebrate everything Hedland with local community groups and businesses showcasing their goods and services.

There will be performances from local artists including dancers, theatrical, musical and sport/recreation as well as food stalls and other demonstrations.

“Given Hedland’s transient nature, the Welcome to Hedland event is a way to foster community spirit and builds on the Town’s commitment to improve liveability by providing quality family friendly events,” Mayor Carter said.

Stallholders who would like to be part of the Welcome to Hedland Community Expo can fill out the online form on the porthedland.wa.gov.au website.

The three-day event is sponsored by Pilbara Ports Authority, Horizon Power, South Hedland Square Charter Hall, Cleanaway and AUS Traffic Management.
