Port Hedland residents are reminded of the presence of the Canine Parvovirus, a highly contagious virus which can be life threatening to both adult dogs and puppies.
The Pilbara has some of the highest rates of the parvovirus in Australia, due to a high number of unvaccinated dogs and limited grass to protect dogs from contaminated soil.
Dogs catch the disease by ingesting the virus that is shed in the droppings of infected dogs.
Mayor Camilo Blanco said it was the responsibility of all dog owners to take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.
“This virus can cause great distress to infected dogs, including lethargy, severe vomiting, loss of appetite and diarrhea.
“A key preventative measure is the parvo vaccine, which is included in the routine puppy vaccinations.
“However, vaccinations should be boosted every year where possible by a qualified veterinary practitioner.
“If you suspect your dog has the virus or are unsure if prior vaccination has occurred, please contact your vet to organise a test for the virus to be performed.
“Infected dogs can be treated and generally recover, however vaccination is clearly preferable.”
If you know your dog is infected with the virus, please contact Ranger Services on 08 9158 9300 or visit www.porthedland.wa.gov.au for more information.
