You're invited to the Town's free, all ages Australia Day events on Wednesday 26 January, 2022. We're holding these events for the community to come together and celebrate our shared achievements, share stories and be proud of the nation we call home. In the afternoon, cool off from the Pilbara sun with the BHP Community Pool Party from 2pm to 5pm at South Hedland Aquatic Centre. There'll be free entry, family activities, a free barbecue and new inflatables.

Cap off the day's festivities with the Pilbara Ports Authority Fireworks Spectacular from 5:30pm to 9pm at Kevin Scott Oval. There'll be music, food vans, family activities, a screening of Red Dog at 7pm and the fireworks spectacular will blast off from 8:30pm.

Please be advised these are alcohol and drug free events. Help Hedland stay COVID safe by keeping hands washed and sanitised, do not enter if you are feeling unwell, maintain social distancing at all times and cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow.

Help keep Hedland COVID safe by:

  • Staying home from the event if you’re unwell
  • Keeping hands washed and sanitised using the onsite facilities
  • Covering coughs and sneezes with your elbow then practising hand hygiene
  • Maintaining physical distancing and avoiding unnecessary physical contact with others
  • Scan in using the mandatory QR code or paper register located at the event entry

  • Free access into South Hedland Aquatic Centre on Wednesday 26 January from 12:00pm – 6:00pm

Accessibility

  • The BHP Community Pool Party is accessible for attendees in wheelchairs or those utilising prams. The venue has accessible parking and an accessible change facility including toilet and hoist.  If you require use of the aqua wheelchair please visit the Kiosk. Access into the pools include a ramp entry into the main pool and a beach entry into the leisure pool.

Parking

  • If you are driving to the event, free parking is available along Leake Street and surrounding areas. Accessible parking is available on Leake Street.

    Food and Drinks

    • The Town will be providing a free sausage sizzle at the event and drinks can be purchased from the Kiosk. We encourage you to bring along your refillable water bottles and utilise the onsite water fountain. Patrons are also able to bring their own food and non-alcoholic drinks, however please ensure no glass or ceramic containers or bottles used.
    • Patrons are reminded this is a smoke, alcohol and other drug free event.

    Information and Safety

    • Attendees are reminded that it will be a hot day so stay hydrated and remember to slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade and slide on your sunnies.
    • If you have any questions, lost something or someone or need medical attention please visit the Information Desk or Kiosk. In the event of an emergency, follow the directions from staff.
    • Please note children under the age of twelve years must be within visual line of sight at all times by a person eighteen years of age or older. Children under the age of six years must at all times be within arm’s reach of a person eighteen years of age or older

    Gratwick Aquatic Centre

    • To facilitate the pool party at South Hedland Aquatic Centre, Gratwick Aquatic Centre will be closed on Wednesday 26 January.

    Accessibility

    • The Pilbara Ports Authority Fireworks Spectacular is accessible for attendees in wheelchairs or those utilising prams.
    • The venue accessible toilets (Unisex Left Hand/ Baby Change, Male Left Hand, Female Right Hand) and parking facilities.
    • An accessible viewing area for wheelchairs has been designated as part of the stage viewing area.
    • Assisted listening devices are available for the event and can be signed out at the Information Desk as per the event map.

    Parking

    • If you are driving to the event, free parking is available at Wanangkura Stadium and Faye Gladstone Netball Courts. Overflow parking locations is available at the Matt Dann Theatre and Cinema and Dreamers Corner. A temporary cross walk will be in place along Hamilton Road, opposite Caltex Service Station.
    • Designated accessible parking, taxi/rideshare zones and loading zones are available at Wanangkura Stadium.

    Chairs and Picnic Blankets

    • Patrons are encouraged to bring their own chairs and picnic blankets to the event. Please be respectful of other attendees and follow the picnic rug/ chair signs.

    Food and Drinks

    • There will be a great range of food and non-alcoholic drink options available at the event. Patrons are also able to bring their own food and non-alcoholic drinks however, please ensure no glass containers or bottles used. There is a public water fountain onsite.
    • Patrons are reminded this is an alcohol and other drug free event. It is an offence in Western Australia for persons of any age to drink in public, such as on the street, park or beach.
    • Food vendors include Frozen Cones, Mesmerising Delights of India, Cab City Pizzeria, J&R Malaysian Kitchen, PPP-Popcorn, Scoops 'N Sips and The Twisty Foodie.

    Road Closures and Traffic Management

    • Community members are advised that the following road closures will be in place from 4:30pm- 10:00pm on Wednesday 26 January 2022:
        • A portion of Parola Court, South Hedland
        • Hudson Way, South Hedland
    • For attendees parking in the overflow parking area, a temporary cross walk will be in place along Hamilton Road, opposite Caltex Service Station. Community members are advised that there will be an increase vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the area, please ensure you follow all road rules and directions given by the traffic management staff.

    • If you have any questions, have lost something or someone or need medical attention approach one of our friendly event staff or visit the Information Desk/First Aid location. In the event of an emergency follow the directions of the event staff.
