The Town of Port Hedland has welcomed the Western Australian Government’s announcement to significantly expand Government Regional Officer Housing (GROH) across regional WA, recognising Port Hedland as a key area for investment.
Announced by Premier Roger Cook as part of the State Government’s Seven Cities vision, the program, will deliver more than 500 new homes for frontline government workers across seven priority regional centres over the coming years.
The initiative aims to unlock the next wave of regional economic development and deliver quality infrastructure and services throughout the State.
The announcement of GROH Housing supports the attraction and retention of essential workers, including teachers and police officers in regional communities where housing availability remains a critical challenge.
Mayor Jacinta Behrend said the Town welcomes the announcement, and its recognition of Port Hedland.
“For a long time, we’ve been saying that housing is a handbrake on Hedland’s future.”
“Ensuring that essential workers have further access to sustainable and affordable housing is fundamental to the delivery of core services in communities like ours,” Mayor Behrend said.
“It's important our teachers, police and other frontline staff can live locally - as it's is vital to community safety, wellbeing and the long-term liveability of our town.”
The Pilbara has been identified as a priority region under the program, reflecting the scale of current and future workforce demand linked to ongoing economic activity.
Delivery of the GROH program will be phased over several years and led by the Western Australian Government in partnership with industry.
Alongside Port Hedland, is Karratha, Broome, Kalgoorlie, Geraldton, Albany and Bunbury.
Mayor Behrend said the Town looks forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the State Government as planning progresses.
“Investment in housing is a critical part of building strong, resilient regional communities,” Mayor Behrend said.
“The Town of Port Hedland will continue to advocate for improved housing outcomes and work constructively with the State Government and stakeholders to support long term service delivery and community growth.”
Further information on the GROH program, including delivery timelines and housing locations, will be provided by the Western Australian Government as the initiative progresses.
