Temporary closure for South Hedland Aquatic Centre

Published on Monday, 13 February 2023 at 1:02:00 PM

The South Hedland Aquatic Centre will be closed for several weeks from late April while the Town of Port Hedland completes critical upgrade works.

The Town is investing to replace the vinyl liner in the 25m pool after it became detached from the concrete shell, while structural tile repairs will be carried out on the 50m pool.

The works are scheduled to start on April 24 and take two months to complete.

Mayor Peter Carter said the council was committed to a new aquatics centre as part of the South Hedland Integrated Sports Hub development.

“South Hedland Aquatic Centre is well utilised all-year round by so many people in the Hedland community,” Mayor Carter said.

“That’s why we are investing in both the pools to ensure they meet all health and safety requirements until such time as the new aquatic centre is built as part of the SHISH development.

“The SHISH development will be a legacy piece of infrastructure for the Hedland community and one the Town is excited to be delivering.

“We regret that SHAC will need to close for the duration of the works and thank the community for its support. Unfortunately, this also means Term 2 of Swim School will be cancelled.”

Mayor Carter encourages regular users of the SHAC facilities to utilise the facilities at Gratwick Aquatic Centre in Port Hedland in the interim.

From April 24, GAC’s opening hours will be extended for the benefit of its users to:

  • 5am-7pm Monday-Thursday
  • 5am-6pm Fridays
  • 8am-6pm Saturdays
  • 10am-6pm Sundays
