Kurlu Kurlu Wirri: Built for our little people, loved by everyone

Since opening in December, Kurlu Kurlu Wirri | Little People Play has quickly become more than a playground,  it’s becoming one of Hedland’s favourite places to gather, connect and make memories.

Families are rolling in with eskies and picnic blankets. Kids are racing ahead of their parents to reclaim their favourite piece of equipment, and on any given afternoon you’ll see people from all corners of Hedland sharing space, conversations and a sense of pride in something created for everyone.

The official opening last week was a huge success, with families, community groups and stakeholders celebrating the start of something special. The launch was just the beginning, the real story is unfolding every day as Hedland locals make this place their own.

Local Indigenous construction company Yurra took the Town’s early concept and transformed it into a story told through colour, shape and play. The rich red soft fall reflects our iron‑ore mounds; the blues echo the harbour and even the small details, like the helipad markings, honour the character of our coastline. It’s design that feels familiar, meaningful and uniquely Hedland.

The playground’s dual name, Kurlu Kurlu Wirri, means Little People Play in Kariyarra language, a warm reminder that this space belongs to our kids, our families and our community.

One of the most loved features is the inclusive design. Wide paths, accessible equipment and shaded areas make it a place where every child can play alongside their siblings and friends.

This playground didn’t appear overnight. It came to life because people, many working quietly behind the scenes, poured their time, creativity and energy into it. They may never seek the spotlight, but their work is written into every beam, bolt and colour of the space.

Being part of the team delivering this project has been incredibly rewarding. This space represents a significant investment in creating an inclusive and welcoming public space for our Hedland community. Kulu Kulu Wirri provides people of all abilities with an engaging environment to enjoy. Built by our community for our community.

This space would not have been possible without the $4 million in funding support from Lotterywest, whose generosity helped transform a local idea into a vibrant, inclusive play space for Hedland’s growing community.

The best part is seeing how naturally Hedland has made this place its own. BBQs sizzling, kids playing tag between the shaded areas and parents chatting while the ocean breeze drifts in.

These are the moments that make a town feel like a community, small, everyday scenes that stitch us together.

Kurlu Kurlu Wirri isn’t just a playground.
It’s a gathering place.
A breathing space.
A reminder of what can be created when local people, local culture and local pride come together.
