Hedland has taken home the State wide Award for Litter Prevention and Waste Management as part of the 2018 Keep Australia Beautiful WA Tidy Town Awards.

This Award is in recognition of the collaborative work between The Town of Port Hedland and the Community to improve Hedland’s liveability and environmental sustainability.

In line with the Litter Prevention Strategy for WA 2015-2020, the Town has made it a top priority to reduce litter in public spaces and improve waste management processes.

Mayor Camilo Blanco said the Award was well deserved recognition for the community’s hard work in this area.

“Over a number of years, groups like the Care for Hedland Environmental Association have played a central role in coordinating volunteers, clean-up efforts and litter prevention awareness campaigns.

“The Town has also spearheaded improved waste management process recently, such as the tyre management project and more accessible waste disposal bins.

“This Award shows the positive work which can be achieved when grassroots community organisations and the Town have the same vision.

“I’d like to thank both the Town’s staff and grassroots community volunteers for their drive, determination and passion for this cause.”

Care For Hedland Environmental Association Chairperson Kelly Howlett said that the Award is a testament to the terrific efforts of the many, many volunteers each weekend, the contribution of local industry, business and Town of Port Hedland staff, that all assist to do their bit to help reduce litter and manage waste on behalf of our community.

“Litter and waste is a whole of community issue. Port and South Hedland are unique in that everyone does truly come together and do what they can to make a difference. Care For Hedland is proud that our work in this area and the efforts of everyone, large and small, in coming together to tackle litter and waste has been recognised through this Award.” said Ms Howlett.
