A new way to connect at Kurlu Kurlu Wirri playground

There’s something quietly powerful happening at Kurlu Kurlu Wirri | Little People Play — a small addition that’s already making a big difference.

The new communication board, proudly installed at the playground, is more than just a panel of symbols and pictures. It’s a bridge. A voice. A way for people of all abilities to express their needs, share their ideas, and simply feel understood.

Communication boards help children and adults communicate by pointing to words, pictures or symbols — a vital tool for people with autism, developmental delays, disability, or for anyone wanting to learn and engage in another communication style. This one was created with Hedland’s community at its heart.

Designed with input from people with lived experience from right here in Port Hedland, including staff from the Cassia Education Support Centre, members of the Hedland Access and Inclusion Action Group, parents, carers and community advocates, the board reflects what inclusion looks like when we build it together.

It has already received positive feedback from families in the disability community, who’ve said how meaningful it is to see a tool like this available in a public space. For many, it signals that this playground isn’t just accessible; it’s welcoming.

The board even includes a QR code linking to a printable version, making it easy for parents and carers to use at home or anywhere communication support is needed.

This project was brought to life in collaboration with Tracey Hunter from the Communities team and the Hedland Access and Inclusion Action Group, a testament to what happens when community passion meets thoughtful design.

“Creating spaces where every child, every parent, and every carer feels supported is at the heart of what we do,” said Anna Savill, Manager of Youth and Community Development. “This communication board is a beautiful example of how small changes can open big doors for connection, confidence and inclusion.”

Kurlu Kurlu Wirri was always intended to be a space where children of all abilities can play, explore, and connect. This communication board helps us take another step forward in creating a Hedland where everyone feels seen, included and able to participate fully.

Because if we can be anything, let’s be inclusive.

Together, we are building a thriving, resilient and compassionate community where everyone belongs.
