The annual budget, approved by the Town’s new commissioners at Wednesday night’s Ordinary Council Meeting, ensures funding for the delivery of services, programs and projects for the Hedland community.
This year’s budget continues to progress the Town’s strong focus on financial sustainability. This approach will support future funding being available for the development of a range of community facilities, enhancing liveability and supporting the community to thrive.
Alongside the annual budget, a refreshed Council Plan was also adopted. The plan is interim and will be fully revised when a new Council is elected in March 2026.
Chairperson of Commissioners Jessica Shaw said passing the budget allowed the Town to continue to build on its goals of increasing liveability in Hedland and supporting the community to thrive.
“This is a future-focused budget, that ensures a sensible approach towards strategic reserves and the potential funding of infrastructure projects and community facilities,” she said.
“I’m very pleased we have been able to progress the budget, including confirming the Town’s rating approach, and updated fees and charges.
“We are here to steady the ship, maintain sound governance, and prepare the ground for the next Council. This year’s annual budget and interim Council Plan will keep essential projects moving, without delay, while at the same time acknowledging that some decisions carry far-reaching implications.
“Where choices would bind the Town for years to come, we believe it is right to keep preparatory work underway but leave the final decisions for the newly elected Council to make, on a fully informed basis.
“Much of the Council’s income comes from annual rates levied, and we think it’s a fair and responsible approach to ensure that everyone who uses our local roads, infrastructure and services contribute a fair share,” Ms Shaw said.
The Town has also introduced a special scheme for resident ratepayers, to recognise and reward their ongoing contribution to the community. Owner-occupier residential ratepayers can redeem these benefits at Town facilities:
- At Port Hedland Leisure, receive a $10.50 discount per fortnight on Platinum Membership
- At Matt Dann Theatre, receive one free small popcorn and drink valued at $10, with each attendance
To redeem these special offers, owner-occupier residential ratepayers can present their rate notice and proof of address at Matt Dann Theatre or Port Hedland Leisure.
