Local Government election on 28 March for Town of Port Hedland

A Local Government election will be held on Saturday 28 March 2026, giving the Hedland community the opportunity to elect nine Council positions, including the position of Mayor.

The election will be conducted by postal vote. There will be opportunities to lodge postal voting papers in-person at designated Town locations. If you are not enrolled, you will not receive your voting papers, and you cannot vote.

“We’ve been struck by how strong and resilient the Hedland community is, and how deeply people care about their town,” said Jessica Shaw, Chair of Commissioners.

“This is an important time for the community to reengage with local government. People have been clear that they want the Town to do better, and the upcoming elections are an important way that they can help achieve that. That means being enrolled, supporting and encouraging great people to stand, and at the very least, voting. If nothing changes, nothing changes.”

“Commissioners Aldridge, Yuryevich and I have spent the past four months listening to the community and working to rebuild confidence in the Town. The upcoming election gives you the opportunity to choose the leadership that can shape a brighter future for Hedland.”

While the election will be conducted by the Western Australian Electoral Commission, the Town of Port Hedland will be working closely with the community in the lead up to 28 March to ensure everyone who is eligible can have their say on who will lead the community and shape the future of the town.

Today, the Town launched a targeted campaign to support the election. The campaign, called ‘Your Town, Your Time’ is positive, forward-looking, has a strong call to action, and focuses on civic engagement across the community.

Voting in local government elections is how communities choose who represents them on Council.

Local Government elections influence the policies that directly affect the neighbourhood – services, facilities, events, activities, rates, fees and charges, infrastructure, public works – the Town’s liveability.

Every vote is equal, and every vote counts.
