Welcome to Your Port of Discovery...
Port Hedland is a dynamic town of 15,000 people located in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. The original inhabitants, the Karriyarra people, call the place Marapikurrinya for the hand shaped formation of the tidal creeks coming off the natural harbour.
The lifestyle is relaxed and open. The Town's location on the ocean provides for a variety of aquatic leisure activities including superb fishing. Whales and nesting flatback turtles can be seen in season. Millstream and Karijini National Parks are within easy driving distance, while Broome and the Kimberley are also within reach.

Hedland's Future Today
Our vision is clear. We believe the Town of Port Hedland can be a vibrant regional city of at least 40,000 people by 2025. The 15 year timeframe for development hasbeen broken into three horizons to enable better planning.
- Here and now - 2011 to 2013
- On the horizon - 2013 to 2018
- Over the horizon - 2018 to 2025
The projects that are planned, projected or preferred are set out using these horizonz so that anyone interested in Port Hedland can gain a clear picture of what is required during each period. This document does not touch on those projects that are already underway in Port Hedland can gain a clear picture of what is required during each period. Land, Housing and Community Infrastructure Update 15 August 2011
The Town of Port Hedland is growing quickly and is eager to work closely with the development industry and government to transform the Town into a vibrant regional city of the North.

The Town is committed to working closely with LandCorp and State Land Services to deliver quick turnaround times to development proposals, so that construction can proceed quickly. The Town has also undertaken several new initiatives that are aimed at fast-tracking land release and development within the Town, such as:
1. The Town’s Land Rationalisation Plan: This plan identifies all vacant land within both Port and South Hedland and discusses the opportunities that exist for land development at each site.
2. Planning for the New Spoil Bank Precinct and the Pretty Pool Development: Both highly attractive development sites, of which Council endorsed its preferred concept designs earlier this year, as the precursor to the release of various land parcels in these areas throughout 2010.
3. Establishing a new Economic and Land Development Department: As economic growth within the town is closely linked to the ready availability of developable land, the primary focus of this new team is on working closely with government and developers to streamline the land availability and development approvals processes. If you’re interested in speaking to one of our new staff in this Department, please call the Town on 9158 9300.
The Town looks forward to working closely with companies to develop quality projects in a timely manner. If you would like more information, or are visiting the Town and would like a tour of the potential development opportunities, please contact the Mayor Kelly Howlett on telephone (08) 9158 9311 or Mobile 0439 941 431. The Mayor is willing to show you and/or representatives of your organisation the numerous opportunities for quality development proposals that exist.
