Start a Routine to Never Stop Reading

Published on Wednesday, 18 April 2018 at 4:07:05 PM

The benefits of reading aloud to primary school aged children are being promoted through the WA Department of Education’s Campaign, “Never Stop Reading.”

On Thursday, 19 April at 2:30pm, an Ambassador from the Campaign will talk to attendees at South Hedland Library about the developmental benefits children experience as a result of story time with adults.

Port Hedland Mayor, Camilo Blanco, said it was important to recognise the benefits of reading aloud.

“Research has shown the positive effects on learning and reading skills as a result of reading aloud with your children throughout primary school.

“Children’s language, phonological awareness, print concepts, comprehension and vocabulary outcomes can all benefit from the practice.

“Importantly, reading aloud has been shown to be particularly beneficial for children at risk of reading difficulties.

“With more than half of Western Australian children not having anyone reading to them at home, it’s something I would encourage all parents and caregivers to consider working into their routine.

“Please come along on Thursday afternoon if you would like to hear more.”
